If there's one good thing that came out of the pandemic, it’s our love affair with plants. In 2020, Australians spent $2.6 billion on more than
2 billion plants and that trend shows no signs of slowing down.
Our plant obsession may have started as a way to beat boredom and beautify our homes during lockdown, but we’ve since discovered that our indoor jungles have a host of other benefits.
Research shows plants purify the air, relieve stress, boost mood and improve concentration.
Plus, they’re so darn pretty! We’re so in love with these 10 indoor plants that are trending in 2022, we can barely stand it.
The Silver Monstera’s deep green leaves with shimmering silver highlights look incredible as they trail down a shelf, hanging basket or trellis. This variety might appear more delicate than the uber-popular Deliciosa, but it’s just as easy to care for. Pop it in a spot with bright to moderate indirect light and water it occasionally.
Who doesn’t love a fancy, frilly fern?! The classic Boston fern is making a huge comeback with its showy tufts of flouncy foliage. Some ferns can be finicky, but the Boston variety only needs a warm and well-lit spot (no direct sun) and regular watering to thrive.
Move over, fiddle leaf fig - you’ve had your time in the (filtered) sun. The new ficus on the block is the umbellata with its gorgeous heart-shaped leaves. Place it in bright indirect light and only water it moderately.
Flowering plants are so hot right now and hoyas don’t disappoint with their deep green leaves and clusters of delicate blooms. They need bright indirect light and a pot with good drainage because they’re sensitive to overwatering.
With variegated plants still bang on-trend in 2022, the Philodendron Pink Princess kicks it up an extra notch. Boasting bright pink and white variegation on large heart-shaped leaves, she’s a bit of a show pony. Give her plenty of indirect light and let the soil dry out completely between waterings for best colour results.
The Mini Monstera gets its nickname from its split leaves that resemble those of Monstera deliciosa, but it isn’t actually a Monstera and its leaves are much smaller. Rhaphidophora tetrasperma can climb up a pole or drape down a shelf in all its delicate glory. Place it in a brightly lit room and keep the soil moist.
If you really want to impress your guests, place one of these babies in the middle of your coffee table. With its scale-like green and silver leaves, it turns heads every time. Another lover of bright indirect sunlight, the Silver Dragon requires moist and well-drained soil.
Chain of Hearts is a show-stopping trailing plant featuring heart-shaped leaves that can come in various shades of green, cream and purple. It can grow up to four metres, so it’s an ideal plant for a hanging basket or pot. Choose a well-lit spot away from direct sun and water only when the soil is dry.
Yet another silver fox on the list, Satin Pothos’s matte green leaves feature large splashes of silver that catch the eye. It needs - you guessed it - bright indirect light and should only be watered when 75 percent of its soil is dry. Satin Pothos can trail up to 90 centimetres or more if you let it.
Mistletoe Cactus commands attention with its messy cascades of stems. Pop it on a shelf or in a hanging basket and watch it trail down, down, down. If you keep it in a shady spot, water it more often than your average cactus and fertilise it, you may be rewarded with delicate flowers in winter and spring.
